To Patch or Not To Patch - Damaged Areas of Your Roof

To Patch or Not To Patch?

Many homeowners wonder if they can patch a damaged or deteriorating section of roof instead of replacing the entire thing. Some would like to roof over the existing shingles instead of tearing off the old roof.  There are things to consider with both options:
Patching can work, but it includes all of the same issues, and then some, as replacing a few shingles. For instance, unless you just built the home, you can't always predict what might be under damaged shingles.
Basically, it’s a good idea to consult with a home roofing professional if you’re considering patching your roof just as when deciding if it’s okay to simply replace shingles.  A home roofing professional will do a thorough inspection to determine if a patch will extend your roof’s lifespan and clear up the concerns which prompted the need for the patch, or if it is more advisable for the health of your roof to do a replacement.
At Lowry Roofing Co, our inspection crew will assess both the exterior of your roof, as well as the boards in your attic.  This is important because attic boards will generally show if moisture has made its way through the decking and into your home.
Outside, signs of a more serious problem include shingles that are curling at the edges or starting to buckle. Another indicator of problems is the presence of granules - the small, pebble-like pieces that coat the outside of the shingle - in your gutters or on the ground.
Additionally, a sagging roof is a definite sign of a serious problem. If you notice any sagging, don't wait to give Lowry Roofing Co a call. The entire roof will need to be replaced as soon as possible.
Even if it’s feasible to patch your roof, the outcome might not be aesthetically pleasing. Patching a damaged area is usually a much larger undertaking than fixing a spot in need of a few shingles. That generally makes it more difficult to blend the repaired section in with the existing roof which could leave you with a strange looking area in visible areas of your roof.
